1st Artists on Main Showcase

Hair Society Institutes Elements of the Universe Project

The 1st Artists on Main project was completed on August 16th by the Hair Society Institute. The talented students at HSI created the elements of the universe through their art on live models. The Artists on Main initiative is all about small but mighty projects. In 2022, Williston was the recipient of a $5,000 grant from the ND Department of Commerce for their Artists on Main initiative. The Artists on Main Grant was not only a monetary benefit, but also provided education and support to the community and its facilitators.

The Grant was distributed to 4 artists within the Williston Community, the Hair Society Institute Students being one of the recipients. The HSI is a cosmetology school that has been operating in Williston since 2021. The school offers various programs for hair, nails, esthetician, and more. The Elements of the Universe project provided a unique opportunity for the students to learn about the performative power of makeup and hair. They gained their inspiration from many different images online and created mood boards for each element. The 5 elements they showcased were earth, fire, wind, water, and ice. The students came in early on the morning of the 16th to begin the transformations of their live models. They added meticulous details to the model’s hair and face to showcase each element accurately and artistically. A huge congratulations to everyone involved, Leticia Kirkwood, the Director of HSI, Ayden Nielson, the student that coordinated the project, and all the students and models who took the time to execute their vision of the elements of the universe!
