State and National Parks and Historical Sites

National Parks Week was Last Week (April 22nd-April 30th) and I just wanted to take some time to highlight some incredible spaces we have in the MonDak Region. Spaces where you can enjoy nature and honor the history of our area all in one spot!

Theodore Roosevelt National Park- This national park is located south of Watford City and it is in the heart of the Badlands. It is about a 45-minute or an hour drive to the North Unit Park entrance. There you can enjoy hiking, camping, and bicycling. The wildlife includes Bison, Prairie Dogs, Bobcats, Coyotes, and Longhorn Sheep. It is the perfect day trip for you and your family to enjoy!

If you want to extend your experience, check out the South Unit located near Medora, ND. Medora is just about a 2-hour drive from Williston and it houses a lot of great attractions all year round!

Fort Union Trading Post- Fort Union is a National Historic Site. It was the most important fur trading post within our region. The Trading post holds a lot of history. On June 15-18th, the Fort Union Rendezvous will be a way to witness history come alive!

Alongside the National Parks and Historic sites, there are also several North Dakota State Historical Sites to check out!

The Confluence Interpretative Center- The confluence center is a great way to learn about the region’s local history. They always seem to be changing out their exhibit with new points of history for this area. It can range from the building of the railroad, farming life, and more about the local Native American Tribes.

Fun Fact- The confluence is of the Missouri and Yellowstone Rivers coming together.

Fort Buford State Historical Site- Located near the Fort Union Trading post, sits the military post called Fort Burford. It was built in 1866 and served as a supply depot for military operations. It is well known for the location where Sitting Bull Surrendered.

Lewis and Clark State Park- This state park is located just about 20 Miles outside of Williston. This park is the hub for many summer activities including boating, fishing, swimming, camping, and fishing. The park has several rentals you can take advantage of to use during the summer. Plus, many hiking trails you can walk along to enjoy the beautiful Lake Sakakawea.
